The problem is only compounded by the fact that this is, effectively, a completely different show from season one. Indeed, it's fallen into a very common trap for acclaimed shows in their second seasons - it assumes that because we were on board for season one, we'll be on board for season two, and it doesn't have to do the necessary work of creating an engaging story, characters, or setting. Stories, on some level, are about giving those who consume them a reason to care, and True Detective, season two, has been lousy at that. Related True Detective's big shootout doesn't make up for season 2 being pretty bad so farīut it's also the episode that showed me just how little I gave a damn about any of this.
